ACADEMICS

Standards and Curriculum

Since our inception, Master’s Academy has maintained a high academic standard, which continues to this day, while recognizing that not all of our students are college bound.

The founding Board of Directors of Master’s Academy researched multiple curricula and decided to adopt the Principle Approach®, the Noah Plan Curriculum®, and the Notebook Method.

The Principle Approach® is a product of the educational practices of the founding era of America, when education was classical and biblical, and the end goal of schooling was the development of Christian self-government and Christian character.

Noah Plan Curriculum® was developed to prepare students with the rich vocabulary, reasoning and research skills, while encouraging them toward an understanding of their value in Christ.  In addition, the principles of Christian liberty and Christian self-government for the individual are stressed.

The Notebook Method embraces the four steps of learning: research, reason, relate and record – commonly termed “The 4 R’s.”  With teacher directed research, students learn to reason through what they are taught, relate their knowledge to everyday life, and record their work in notebooks. Students become creators and contributors of their educational process, and not just consumers of it.

With the growth of our school and advances in technology, we have sensed the need to broaden the educational resources our teachers’ use in conjunction with increasing the courses and services we offer to our students. As a result, we have retained the strongest qualities of the Principle Approach®, the Noah Plan Curriculum®, and the Notebook Method in the development of The Master’s Approach to Christian Education, which now serves as the foundation for our strong academic program.

Master’s Academy, therefore, does not use only one curriculum method. Instead, we research a wide spectrum of curricula for each subject and select what is best for our needs and the needs of our students, while never compromising our philosophical foundation, biblical worldview, and our commitment to strong academics.

All students, K-12, are required to keep a notebook where they store and record their progress and which is assessed by their teachers. This age-old practice inculcates in our students the need to be well ordered and to manage their work, while also providing a wonderful record of their educational journey.

Although Master’s Academy is not a formal classical school, we do follow broadly the three-fold classical model of grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

  • GRAMMAR
The lower school lays the foundation for future academic pursuits with a strong emphasis on the memorization and master of essential concepts.

  • LOGIC (DIALECTIC)
Beginning in the last year or two of lower school, and strengthening in the middle school, students are intentionally moved from concrete concepts to more abstract concepts, with the need to logically apply what they learn to their daily walk with Christ. Students will enjoy opportunities to grow through drama, public speaking, and service, culminating in the annual historical Christian History Tour of Boston.

  • RHETORIC
At the high school level, students are led to fully take charge of their academic pursuits and to own their faith for themselves. Students will further hone their research skills throughout high school, with a strong emphasis on critical thinking. The culmination of a student’s academic career at Master’s Academy is the Senior Thesis, where each senior picks a socially controversial topic and writes a well-reasoned paper, which is also defended before a panel. A graduate of Master’s Academy should be fully equipped to write quality college research papers and to be able to defend their faith logically and intellectually.

Master’s Academy does not strictly align with any external standard, however, the educational standards at Master’s Academy meet, and in many respects far surpass, those of the Florida Department of Education. Our strong standardized test scores are consistently above national averages.
